The Association of Alternative Newsweeklies reminds me a lot of NewCity.com.

Koyaanisqatsi, Powaqqatsi, and the Triumph of Substance: A Conversation With Goddfrey Reggio.

Isys Information Architects, Inc. has published a review of Apple's Quicktime 4.0 focusing on interface design. "One look at QuickTime 4.0 and it is clear that Apple, arguably the most zealous defender of consistency in user interface design, has abandoned its twenty-year effort to champion interface standards."

EvilFish. "Guaranteed to piss off Christians." Hmmm....

The Great American Dollar Bill Locator. Wow, this is an interesting use of the Net.

You know, I laughed when I first saw this site way back in early August of last year, but it's a true classic worthy of another link. I'm still laughing.

Australia is the first country to admit that they are part of a global surveillance system that spies on civilians and companies. Big Brother?

EduWatch: Microsoft Teacher 1.0. [Humor]

Heh, heh. Clueless spammers are always good for a laugh.

Salon: Scott Rosenberg writes about why journalists don't like weblogs.

Hotbot: News & Media: Internet: Commentary

DaveNet: Weblogs. [Dave Winer started one of the first weblogs. Camworld is openly modled after Scripting News]

On discuss.userland.com, a thread has started about weblogs within intranets, something I mentioned in my latest essay on weblogs.

16 Color Cinema. Interesting throwback to the early days.

Wow.

The name Cameron.

Microsoft Becomes Founding Sponsor of Garage.com. Now I know why the wildly popular Apple EvangList mailing list was suddenly shut down and "retired" last month.

Victoria's Secret: The Click Winderbra. [Interactive underwear?]

My old college buddy Phil sent me this funny picture entitled "Not Now, Kid!"

Jason Kottke has a cool little project up called Remember a Movie.

New NewsLog: GeekNews.net

Slashdot: Here Come the WebLogs

From Misterpants comes this picture, which reminded me a lot of my Grandpa picture.

Freedom Forum: Electric Media, Part 2: WebLogs

Instructions on how to give your cat a pill.

ebay: Box of Nothing

Rus the Surfin' Squirrel. Brought to you by the folks at the USDA. Really.

I'm updating my resource boxes to the right. Send me your favorites. Quality is important.

New Weblog: EduWatch.

Slashdot: Part One: Biology and Electric Communities. Jon Katz writes about virtual communities and their social traits. Part Two will focus more on weblogs. (Stay tuned.)

EduWatch: A Proposal to Prevent Children from Accessing Inappropriate Information on the Internet

This is so clever it makes me grin all over.

Now you can control your computer with your brain waves.

More bad news for the consumer. If you have ever been slammed by a phone company, you know how frustrating it can be. There's nothing worse than being forced to pay for something you didn't do or don't have any control over.

www.bushsucks.com. Hmmmm....

You too can have a Darth Vader PEZ dispesner.

H. A. Halpert has a nice little essay on design pre-production.

Those are some darn smart pigeons riding the London Underground subway system. Can anyone in New York report the same behaviors, or are those British pigeons just smarter? [Found at Lindsay's weblog]

My brother Damien has started a great new weblog called EduWatch. It will focus on news and technology within the educational system. Expect lots of great information, essays, and opinions.

I helped Damien with the design. Notice how I purposely created a clean and functional design that does not use any tables. The reason for this is to accommodate the older browsers and computers and slower Internet connections usually found in most school systems.

I helped my co-worker Jonathan design his site some time back. The cool thing about this site is the left-hand table. It renders from a Perl script, with the navigation expanded/collapsed depending on where in the site you're at.

I was with Jonathan when we shot this funny picture of a sign at the local Taco Bell. [Part of his photos page]

Are there really 165 million people online, worldwide?

Tuesday, May 18, 1999

I will be at the 5th Human Factors & the Web conference on June 3.

Consumer Reports: Condoms

More proof that most Americans don't understand how to use technology properly or think about the consequences of their actions.

C|Net jumps into the online auctions industry with auctions.cnet.com.

Grafica Obscura is a site chock-full of interesting stuff.

Peter Merholz has a Webmonkey commentary about speed within web sites.

How portals choose their news links.

Finally, a great article about day trading (and its history). I am very skeptical about day trading and fear that they are going to crash the market. My opinion: Day trading ought to be illegal, as the stock market wasn't designed to support it.

Note: Despite what I said earlier this week, I still seem to be updating CamWorld pretty regularly. Don't be surpised, though if I up and stop for 2-3 days a time.

I remember running across John Shepler's A Positive Light web site sometime last year and had it bookmarked, but never went back. Upon a second look, I see that John's got some surprisingly uplifting and positive essays and stories.

June 25 is Take Your Dog to Work Day.

Just in time for baseball season, it's Heckling 101. Be sure to brush up on the rules for heckling before hurling those insults.

I didn't do any surfing yesterday. Not at work, or at home. And boy, does it feel good! Every year or so we hear about people turning off their TVs for a week and discovering a whole new world around them. Well, what about turning off your computers? Take a break. Go have some fun in the outdoors. They have a word for this sort of thing. It's called vacation.

Why On-Site Searching Stinks.

RLE misses her cat.

Here's a little piece of software called Headline Viewer that supposedly reads in headlines from weblogs. Too bad it's Windows-only.

Chat transcript of an chat with Terry Brooks at TalkCity, where he talks about his new novel, Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace.

CamRant: More About WebLogs

Note: I am no longer a slave to my web site. I'm updating it whenever I feel like it. Instead of spending all my time trying to track down those elusive "great links" I'll be putting more focus on my own writings, essays, and projects. Desired effect: The content will only get better.

Via Slashdot comes yet another paper on free software: Anarchism Triumphant: Free Software and the Death of Copyright

Can you really patent a business method? Hmmm...

After a long absence, CarlMail is back.

Adam Rakunas of The Knock mailing list fame has a great little piece about Star Wars memories up on the Fray.

CIO Magazine has a piece about building an office for optimum IT functionality and comfort. Some of these far-out desk systems proposed by companies like Haworth and Steelcase, while interesting, are simply too strange and uncomfortable-looking to be worthy of consideration.

The mark of a good product and/or advertising campaign is how many parodies it generates. Here's the latest Apple iMac parody.

Every week now my brother has reminded me to watch the new SciFi Channel show Farscape. Tonight, I finally saw it, and I must say I'm quite impressed.

Thursday, May 6, 1999

Note: Instead of trying to update every single day, I'm going to slow the pace down a little and try to post every other day. The quality of links should remain the same, but I will be adding more commentary and opinion. I welcome comments (both good and bad) about this new style for CamWorld.

MediaOne already sucks pretty hard. Now we have to deal with the idiots at AT&T too? I miss Reed Hundt (former FCC chairman). He never would have let the Telecommunications industry get this bad. I also heard that Microsoft is contemplating a 3-4% stake in AT&T, so they can force their crappy Windows CE product onto the unsuspecting high-speed cable subscribers through AT&T's ever-increasing monopoly. Damn, this sucks.

If Microsoft is going to own only 2-3% of AT&T, then only 2-3% of the box-top sets should have WinCE installed by default. I could live with that. Damn it people, let the consumer decide what's best for themself. If the FTC is going to do anything, they'd better do it soon.

"Mom, the TV just crashed!" - a familiar cry only about one to two years away.

Meta thought: Corporations are getting far too powerful. Look at Microsoft. Look at AT&T. Even companies like Barnes & Noble. There's a lot of sneaky and underhanded stuff going on in the bowels of some of these mega-companies. In companies like these, the almighty dollar rules, and the customer comes last. Expect it to get even worse as this trend in business spreads to other Western societies other than the U.S.

Book: Transnational Media Corporation: Global Messages & Free Market Competition. [Written by my Telecommunications professor in college....I learned a lot from Dr. Gershon.]

UserLand Discussion: Americans Are Idiots

The consequences of non-technical people trying to use technical items like computers, cell phones, modems, etc. Everyone involved in technology services should be required to listen to these irate people calling technical support.

Mother's Day is coming up. Now's the time to head on over to Sparks.com and send her a card. They're currently running a promotion where your first card is free.

New WebLog: Virulent Memes. [Very nice...]

Smug still hasn't fixed the typo in their article about weblogs I pointed to on Tuesday.

Tuesday, May 4, 1999

Leslie Harpold writes about weblogs in this month's Smug. [However I think she missed a few important points and jumps to far too many conclusions. Had she done a bit more research, she would have realized that weblogs are more than just glorified bookmark lists and do much towards educating their readers about particular items of interest.]

Bradlands: Why I WebLog

This month's Technology Source has a great case study on the redesign of George Mason University's web site.

I figured out why eBay is so cool. It's because you can buy stuff that brings back childhood memories. And to think I threw all my old Atari stuff away in the late 1980s. On that note, I wish I'd kept my Garbage Pail Kids card collection. I had almost all of them...likely to be worth some serious cash these days.

From the bowels of Geocities comes Writing For Comics, a site chock full of great info for aspiring cartoonists and comics-writers.

Does Salon have penis envy? You decide.

Note: So, I'm all moved into my new apartment. [The old complex sucked pretty hard.] As a belated birthday present to myself (courtesy of Uncle Sam's tax refund) I bought a brand new Sony Trinitron 27-inch TV and a DVD player. I'm now a certified DVD addict trolling eBay and Amazon for cheap DVDs. Feel free to send me your best DVD tips.

Saturday, May 1, 1999

It's moving time. No updates until I get moved into my new apartment. Expect updates to resume next Monday, if not sooner.

Slate tears apart Salon's projected IPO. [via Rafe]
